I’m looking forward to seeing you soon for your photography session.
What to wear for your maternity photoshoot:
The most important advice is to feel comfortable and wear outfits you love and feel confident in. When you feel good, it naturally shows in your photographs.
If your partner and any older children are joining you for the session then choosing colours that coordinate works beautifully: for example, denim paired with tops or knitwear in a complementary palette creates a relaxed, cohesive look without being overly “matched.”
When choosing an outfit to show the shape of your beautiful bump it’s a good idea to go for something fitted in a plain colour. Stretchy, jersey dresses look great and are very flattering, especially with long sleeves.
Finally, if we’re meeting outdoors, try to keep belongings to a minimum where possible. Leaving bags and extra items in the car helps everyone relax and move freely during the session (though of course we’ll work around anything little ones may need).
What to avoid
- Large logos, bold graphics or character prints that can distract from faces and expressions
- Very busy patterns or clashing colours across outfits
- Brand new clothing that hasn’t been worn before (it can feel stiff or uncomfortable)
- Highly contrasting formal and casual outfits within the same group
- Watches, hairbands on wrists, or phones in pockets that may draw attention
A gentle reassurance
Please don’t worry about getting everything “perfect.” Real families aren’t perfectly styled, and that’s part of what makes your photographs feel natural and authentic. If you’re unsure, feel free to send me outfit ideas beforehand and I’ll happily offer some guidance.
The Great British Weather (if we’re meeting outdoors)
I’m often asked what happens if the weather isn’t ideal on the day. The good news is that overcast skies often create beautifully soft, flattering light (sometimes even better than bright sunshine). Most conditions can be embraced, if everyone is dressed appropriately, and we’ll always make a judgement call together the evening before your session if needed.
If your session is planned ‘At Home‘, there’s always the flexibility to move indoors, whatever the weather brings. And please don’t worry about having a perfectly tidy home, I’m very experienced at finding lovely pockets of light and simple backdrops, working with window light to create natural, relaxed photographs in your space.
With over a decade of wedding photography alongside family work, I’m very used to adapting to unpredictable conditions, so you can simply relax and enjoy the experience.
After your shoot:
After your session, I’ll work quietly behind the scenes to curate and gently enhance your photographs, preparing a beautiful private gallery for you to enjoy. As soon as it’s ready, you’ll receive a personal link via email where you can view your images, select your favourites, download your inclusive digital photographs to your device, order additional prints and products, and share the gallery with family and friends.
